Greys first venture into the freespool reels market comes in the shape of the classy looking GFR 5000 and 6000 models, targeting heavy feeder and light to medium specimen fishermen.
Stylish black livery and lustrous aluminium spools belie the GFR’s sub £70 price. And the reel is not just a pretty face. The engineering is equally impressive.
Armed with nine ball bearings and a roller bearing, both models combine smooth performance with formidable cranking power. Other features such as the large line roller and extra sturdy bail arm add to the reels’ heavyweight credentials.
However, the GFR is not just about brawn. There is finesse aplenty. The front drag is micro adjustable, with a recessed anti-reverse lever. And the rear-sited freespool lever has a secondary adjustment knob underneath it to allow extra drag to be applied in freespool mode to counter drift or flow. Gear ratio is a brisk 4.9:1.
The two aluminium spools have spring loaded line clips and there are free line identification stickers to identify what each spool is loaded with. Line capacities are 230m 0.33mm, 180m 0.37mm and 150m 0.40mm for the GFR60 and 240m 0.31mm, 200m 0.33mm and 150m 0.37mm for the GFR50. Both models are available in right or left hand wind.
