US tackle manufacturer Ardent had plenty of new and different products for dealers and media to ponder over at the recent ICAST trade show in Orlando.
The Apex Flipping Reel is a big new introduction for the Missouri company. Designed by the number two all-time B.A.S.S. money-winner, Denny Brauer, the reel is specifically engineered for flipping with a frame shape to minimise hand discomfort.
Weighing 5.9 ounces, it also reduces arm and shoulder fatigue. The thin arbor spool and nose design are there to improve accuracy and eliminate the need for a level wind mechanism. Other features include 11lb of drag, 10-plus-one ball bearings and 6.6:1 gearing.
Ardent was also showing its competitively-priced Arrow line of baitcasters, spinning reels and combos, while in fishing line the company introduced the Strong Braid brand from its German partner World Fishing Tackle, manufacturer of the Gliss line that is already proving very popular with US retailers. “Our pro staffers are lining up to use it,” said Mike Brooks.
But Ardent’s surprise product at the show was the Pro Rod Overgrip, a patented silicone and rubber grip that fits tightly over the reel seat.
“It is designed to ease the irritation, aches and strains that can affect the rod hand,” explained Ardent CEO Mike Brooks. “It makes life more comfortable for the angler than anything other grip developers have made.
“It has probably created the most interest at the show for us. It is a low-cost accessory item that really makes a difference to the angler.”
The grip is available in spinning and baitcasting versions and can be bought as an individual item or preassembled on a rod.
