‘Flagship’ angling show set for the UK

The organiser of the British Carp Angling Championship has launched what it describes as the “flagship” consumer-angling event for the UK.
Angling Live aims to be the UK’s largest public fishing event and will be staged on March 23-24 2013 at ExCeL, London – one of the nation’s top exhibition venues.
The man behind the ambitious project is Simon Bennie, owner of Angling Media and a person with more than 18 years experience in the exhibition industry.
He told Angling International: “Angling does not currently have a blue chip quality exhibition that does justice to the scale of our industry”.
“There are a lot of good shows out there, but many focus on the pile it high sell it cheap model and whilst this has a place in our market we think there is room in the market for a manufacturer/wholesaler led event with a controlled retail element.
“There will be no more than 15 retailers at Angling Live and they won’t have to store tons of gear on the exhibition floor. Visitors purchasing product will be able to collect larger items from a dedicated and easily accessible collection area – in much the same way as you would if you shop in John Lewis,” explains Bennie.
“What we will be concentrating on is a polished, professional event that attracts the top manufacturers and – like the other leading consumer events – is a family day out in a top class arena.
“Anglers will have the chance to chat to the consultants on the stands and also test out the products on the water outside the venue.”
Bennie adds: “We recognise fully that we need to convince the industry to get behind this event. We need the leading names to buy into the concept and are confident that we can achieve the support we need to deliver our target of 150 exhibitors.”
As a tempter to companies that book their spaces early, a ‘competitive’ rate of £90 per m2 is being offered – meaning that with stands starting at 9m2 businesses can ensure their presence for as little as £810 plus VAT.
The company has set aside £100,000 for its marketing budget to ensure maximum exposure throughout the angling press. It will also include national TV and radio campaigns and social media and other marketing initiatives.
In addition to its marketing effort, Angling Live will deliver an event full of features that will make the UK angler want to attend.
These will include:
- Under 13’s go free;
- ‘Show only’ offers from UK retailers;
- Celebrity theatre advice;
- Indoor demo lake;
- Outdoor live demos on the docks;
- Daily prize giveaways;
- Crèche for young children;
- Spa facilities for non-anglers.
Bennie says: “The mix will be right. We are aiming to make this event a real family day out in a spectacular setting that visitors will remember for a long time.”
ExCeL is an international exhibition and convention centre that enjoys a stunning waterfront location in the heart of London’s Royal Docks.
The venue is part of a 100 acre campus, including three on-site DLR stations, easy access to the underground rail system and London City Airport. It also has parking for 3,700 cars, six on-site hotels and numerous on-site bars and restaurants.
“The venue is far removed from anything any other angling show in this country has ever provided,” says Bennie.
He adds that his company is investing £500,000 in the event and expected to make a loss in the first year. He says: “I have been running events for 18 years and I know we are not going to wash our faces in year one. I am a passionate angler and we are in this for the long haul.”
