The first Gander Outdoor store – formerly Gander Mountain – is set to open this week in Lakeville, Minnesota.
Gander Mountain, which also owned the Overton boating business, went bankrupt in March last year, a victim of the challenging outdoor sporting goods retail market across the US which also claimed the likes of The Sports Authority, MC Sport and Sport Chalet. The leases of its 160 stores were bought for over $34 million by North America’s largest RV (recreational vehicle) supplier, Camping World and closed down.
Its Chairman and CEO, Mark Lemonis, a star of The Profit, a television show in the States about saving small businesses, delayed initial plans to start reopening stores in December. Lakeville is the first of 15 to 20 planned by the end March next year, dependent on lease negotiations, and another 40 to 45 before the end of 2018.
Camping World expects to add 700,000 to 1.5 million people to its customer base – currently running at around 3.5 million – after it opens its Gander Outdoors locations.
“We’ve been hard at work getting your Gander Outdoors stores ready. We are excited to announce that our first store will open in Lakeville, MN on Wednesday, December 13th. Follow our Facebook and Instagram to watch as we open our first store and stay tuned for more store announcements,” Lemonis wrote on the company’s Facebook page before the opening.
