The attendance record tumbled for the second year running at Sweden’s top recreational fishing consumer show.
Last year’s Sportfiskemässan attracted a best of 15,513 visitors to Stockholm, while last weekend’s 15,140 was a record for the Jönköping venue.
Swedish fishing journalist Fredrik Stjärnkvist told Angling International: “The show was a big success. My prediction and fear before the event was that there would be a decrease, but it set a new visitor record. I also believed that interest in pike fishing was on the wane, but it seems larger than ever.
“Everyone I talked to was very optimistic even though they looked to the future with caution. A big plus was the large number of young people at the show, which augurs well.”
A total of 165 exhibitors were present including the likes of Pure Fishing, Catch with Care and Flydressing/Vision. The big companies in marine electronics, Garmin, Lowrance and Humminbird, alongside several boat dealers – Westgear, Mojoboats and Borgs Motor – were also present.
Stjärnkvist added that the highlight of the show was the Final of the YouTube competition, Fly v Jerk, which was broadcast live from the stage. Stefan Trumstedt and Pierre Monjarret, from Catch with Care, managed several large pike – caught on the company’s newly launched Miura Mouse lure – in the final hours of the last day to win the trophy.
“The debut of the lure was big news at the show, but my abiding memory will be of all the enthusiasts who queued up for several hours to get a chance to buy handmade lures from Svartzonker (Claes Claesson) and Wolfcreek (Anders Ulvforsen),” added Stjärnkvist.
