Anyone familiar with the quality of E-S-P gear will be excited by its decision to enter the reels market.
The big carp brand has made its debut in the category with the Onyx, a classic looking model in sleek, all-black livery complemented by a wooden handle and subtle red decals.
But with names like Kevin Hewitt and Terry Hearn on the design team, the reel has more than good looks going for it. E-S-P set out to develop a durable big pit reel that filled in the blanks left by other reels on the market.
It is, says the manufacturer, the first reel with two drag adjusters, Fine Drag for micro adjustment and Rapid Lockdown to quickly adjust from free-running to locked-down mode.
The reel also comes with two bespoke long-cast, tapered alloy spools (shallow and ultra-shallow) that do not need backing, eliminating bedding in to improve line lay and casting reach. Three reels can be filled from one 1,000m bulk spool.
The reel also features a quick-fold handle, stainless steel line clip, front drag grit guard and large anti-reverse lever.
Technically, the Onyx certainly appears to tick all the boxes. Machined long-life gearing, 7+1 bearings, a 4.3:1 retrieve ratio and slow oscillation to enhance line lay contribute to its all-round performance.
