The relentless international growth of French sporting goods retailer Decathlon continues with the announcement that it plans to open its first store in Serbia in the summer of 2019, with more likely to follow.
The company, which markets its own Caperlan fishing range along with other tackle brands at its supermarket-style outlets, is expected to begin construction in Belgrade at the beginning of the year.
The city’s government said Decathlon has plans for more than one store in the Serbian capital. “Belgrade has changed. Ikea and Hilton have opened here and Decathlon is another big name coming to our city,” said the Mayor of Belgrade, Sinisa Mali, after meeting with Decathlon’s International Development Manager, Xavier Galice.
Decathlon also operates stores in Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia and Croatia. The company, which has around 1,350 outlets worldwide, recently announced plans to open in the Republic of Ireland and Canada.
