The new BOOYAH ToadRunner – which landed on retailers’ shelves this month – is differentiated from similar frog-like lures by its distinctive tail, which can be shaped to produce different sounds to suit the conditions.
The brand’s pro-staffer, Jason Christie, used a prototype of the bait with great success in last year’s Bassmaster Elite tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir.
Christie used the bait in heavy grass and strong winds in five to six feet of water. “It’s hard to get fish to come up on a more silent bait in those conditions,” he says.
“Around 80% to 90% of the bites I had came in really thick grass. The fish were not in one specific spot and the key was that the ToadRunner allowed me to cover a lot of water each day with really long casts. That, and the bendable tail, is what makes it so good.
“There are not a lot of baits out there that you can reel through the thick stuff and get fish to react like that. And had I not been able to adjust the tail and give it that loud pop I would not have caught those fish.
“The ToadRunner is also fitted with Trokar hooks, which ensure a really good hook-up. I don’t remember losing a fish.”
Christie and BOOYAH kept the bait under wraps at the time. But now the Fort Smith, Arkansas, brand is shipping to retail.
Each pack contains an extra tail and the lure is available in10 colours.
