European media company Bauer, which acquired The Big One show earlier this year, is to launch a second consumer event in 2019.
The company is to replicate the existing annual Farnborough event, scheduled for March, with a sister show in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, the following month.
It has also revealed plans to introduce new features to Farnborough to drive attendance.
“We always felt there was an opportunity to not only develop Farnborough, but also to add another similar show. We feel we are in a strong position to do both,” said Bauer’s Managing Director for Sport and Entertainment, Patrick Horton.
“A second show was initially planned for further down the line, but there has been a lot of interest and we decided to go earlier than anticipated. We have positioned the new show in the middle of the country in a strong catchment area for anglers.”
With attendances of around 20,000, The Big One is one of Europe’s largest consumer shows and has added a new dimension to Bauer’s portfolio of magazines, websites and social media channels.
“We bring logistical delivery through our operations team, which has a long experience of show production,” explained Horton.
“We also bring considerable reach through our media business. We estimate there are 306,000 anglers in the catchment area and we already reach 180,000 of them through our magazines and websites. We also have a big radio presence in Birmingham.
“So we believe we are well positioned to deliver a successful experience for exhibitors and visitors.”
The Stoneleigh show will occupy 4,000 square metres in two permanent halls, but has the opportunity to grow into floor space equivalent to Farnborough in the future. Bauer has run a successful equine show at Stoneleigh for some years, so is familiar with the venue and the people.
The venue is no stranger to fishing shows, having hosted events in the past, including the now defunct Tackle & Guns trade show for many years.
Bauer acquired Farnborough’s The Big One only weeks before the last show, so had little time to influence content. However, a number of new features will be introduced in 2019, including a large demo lake. There will also be a Lure Live arena, hailed as the biggest ever show area for lure anglers.
“The Big One has a proven formula based on new gear, great deals and fishing celebrities. Now we want to add to that experience with features that make it an even greater day out,” explained Horton. “We have taken extra space to accommodate the demo lake and this will be the centerpiece of the show.”
Horton has not ruled out further The Big One shows in other locations. “These shows are a great addition to our media business. If there is an opportunity to launch to a significant audience at another location we would certainly look at that.”
Former The Big One owner, Vince Davies, has remained with the show and is focused on the exhibitor side of the event.
