R.L. Winston’s recent acquisition of Bauer has thrown added focus onto the US reel brand. So what better time to introduce the Bauer SST than now?
Launched in 1995, Bauer is known for the high-quality large arbor fly reels which are designed and manufactured in the US. The new SST continues the tradition of precision-made, elegantly-styled models from a company that considers its brand as ‘the Swiss watch of fly reels’.
The new narrow profile frame has multi-sized porting with the spool rotating on sealed, stainless steel ball bearings.
The latest SST uses Bauer’s fully-sealed, zero backlash carbon fibre drag and a ‘silky smooth’ star drag adjustment which is, says Bauer, maintenance free. The star drag dial can be ordered in red, blue, green, gold, black or clear. Light blue or pink cost extra.
The hub is standard red, although gold, blue and clear are also available at an extra cost.
The SST comes in anodised aluminium or all black and is available in sizes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 for 2-weight through 9-weight fly lines. It also features a more simplified line-naming protocol, although the manufacturer points out that it can be comfortably used for a line size smaller or larger, depending on preference.
