Developing a bait to imitate the true swimming action of live baitfish is the ultimate goal for many lure manufacturers. But US company Mann’s Bait believes it has set a new standard for realism with its new Reel N’ Shad, a soft plastic jerkbait designed with a slit down the middle to produce a turbulent action when retrieved.
The new lure was unveiled for the first time at this weekend’s Bassmaster Classic in Greenville, South Carolina, where the company has a booth at the event’s Outdoor Show. Mann’s pro-staffer Paul Elias is fishing the Classic and may call on the Reel N’ Shad if the right conditions prevail.
“Soft plastic jerkbaits have been around for a long time, but what most lure companies have done is try to turn them into swim baits,” says Elias. ‘But when they did that they had to put a big swimming tail on them in order to get that side-to-side action.
“But the design of the Reel N’ Shad’s hollow body produces the most unique, natural-looking swimming action of any soft plastic bait I have ever seen.
“With most baits of this type you really have to jerk your rod and make that action yourself. But with this bait you throw it out and reel it in and you catch fish on it. I am really impressed with it.”
An added attraction is Mann’s patented Hardnose feature, designed to keep the hook firmly in place. And with its unique weedless jighead, the Reel N’ Shad can also be fished around cover to draw bites.
The bait is available in four colours in a 5.25-inch version, although other sizes are in the pipeline. Each pack contains one rigged lure and four spares.
Like all of Mann’s lures, the Reel N’ Shad is manufactured in the US. The Eufaula, Alabama, company distributes nationally and to more than 50 countries around the world.
