Anglers of a certain age will associate the name Avocet with the classic cane fishing rod made by B. James and Son. Now Mitchell, another legendary manufacturer, is hoping its Avocet RZ FS (free spool) reel will make the same kind of impact.
Mitchell has made the reel in two sizes – the 5500 and 6500 – for a range of applications from method feeder fishing to light specimen fishing for species like tench, barbel and carp.
Though inexpensive (you’ll pay under £80 for a pair), the RZ has 5 plus 1 bearings and a 5.1:1 gear ratio. It comes with an aluminium spool with the capacity for 240m of 0.30 line on the 5500 model and 320m on the 6500 model. It has a front drag and a soft-touch handle knob.
Mitchell, one of the Pure Fishing group of tackle brands, is best known for its series of 300 model fixed spool reels in the Sixties.
