The Omega fly reel is at the top of the Allen Fly Fishing range and is designed for spey, low-diameter lines and other applications that require a maximum arbor size for big game fish.
This year’s XLA (extra large arbor) is, says Allen, an improvement on the Kracken XLA, picking up more line per rotation of the handle due to the large outer circumference of the arbor.
Made-in-Detroit, the Omega XLA reel has a full cage and frame with an impressive range of drag, from a no resistance, free spool spin to complete lock down.
“We have limited the cranking radius so the handle has a shorter distance to travel when you are reeling,” explain’s Allen Fly Fishing’s A.J. Gottschalk. “The size five will allow you to pick up around 15¾ inches of line per rotation at the maximum.
“One of the best things about the Omega is the great range of drag. In testing, the rod broke instead of the reel, which is pretty positive. We proved this reel with our Kracken XLA and we wanted to bring it to the market as a US-made package.”
Details of the three Omega models, including diameters, weights, spool stats and capacities, are available on the Allen Fly Fishing website.
