Rod manufacturer Airrus believes that its new multi modulus blanks have the best strength to weight ratio on the market and it is these blanks that have been used in the making of its powerful Wrestle series, which is now available in shops.
Airrus had two prime purposes in mind in creating the new range – heavy-duty bass and pike fishing in both the USA and Europe.
Working on the basis that many heavy-duty rods use high-resin blanks to provide torsional strength, resulting in stiff ‘dead’ actions, the award-winning company has incorporated different modules in different parts of the blank.
Combining high modulus tips with a super-high modulus backbone has, says Airrus, preserved both sensitivity and power. Reaction times are low, minimising tip vibrations after casting and providing greater feel for the lure and for subtle bites, whether fishing top-water or deep water lures. Casting distance and efficiency are also enhanced.
The use of Kigan stainless steel/SiC guides in a smaller size than is usual on rods of this type has kept weight down without restricting the use of any type of braid or fluorocarbon. And by positioning weights before and after the reel seat, Airrus believes it has achieved the perfect balance.
Big bass hunter Mike Long was involved in the 13-month development of the Wrestle and his influence was ‘inspirational’, says Airrus VP Francesco Di Bene. Now the West Coast angler, frequently featured on magazine covers, is working on prototypes that will become the Mike Long Signature Series.
“Mike’s expertise has been vital in designing heavy duty rods because of his experience with this style of fishing,” said Di Bene.
Airrus is a four-time winner of the freshwater rods category at ICAST and the brand used by Boyd Duckett to win the Bassmaster Classic in 2007. It is now Italian owned.
