Nearly 60 retailers travelled to Aspen, Colorado, for the first-ever American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) Dealer Summit.
The inaugural event featured seminars, workshops and networking opportunities all geared up to help improve the dealers’ businesses and to move the sport of fly fishing forward. Following its success, another Dealer Summit is planned for next year.
“I was extremely pleased with the quality of speakers, the poignancy of the topics and vibrant energy each day,” said AFFTA Board Chairman and President of Trout’s Flyfishing, Tucker Ladd. “The attending retailers were energised about their businesses, making me really excited for an even greater attendance next year.”
Angler’s Covey owner, David Leinweber, said: “If I had one negative comment, it would be that there was too much good information at this year’s Dealer Summit. I have so many good ideas that I really don’t know what to act on first.”
Seminar speakers including Dan Mann, Erika Napoletano, Joe Whitworth and Art Webb spoke on a range of topics ranging from inventory management, employee retention, marketing strategies, social media and conservation issues.
Steve Schmidt, owner of Western Rivers Flyfisher, in Salt lake City, Utah, added: “It was an outstanding event – probably one of the best educational programmes I have ever been to. We will be back.”
After the Summit, AFFTA President Ben Bulis issued a challenge to members. He said: “My goal for next year is for each retailer who attended this year’s event to bring two additional retailers with them. We’ll be ready with even more dynamic speakers, topics and retailer resources.”
AFFTA sponsors of the Dealer Summit included Simms Fishing Products, Orvis, Scott Fly Rods, Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures, Hatch Outdoors, Oceans Conservancy, Angling Trade and AFFTA’s Fisheries Fund.
