Abel Automatics taken over by Mayfly Group

Abel Automatics will be celebrating its 25th anniversary year under the ownership of the Mayfly Group.

The Mayfly Group, a private investment company in the US, has taken its first step to becoming a major player in the fly fishing market with the acquisition of the prestigious reel manufacturer, Abel Automatics.

Abel is the first of what the Mayfly Group hopes will be a long list of independently managed partners in the fly fishing community.

Mayfly spokesperson, David Dragoo, revealed that his company is reviewing several other potential acquisitions. He also explained that Abel is set to unveil some exciting new products and services this season.

The investment group plans to use its combined resources to help its companies with market penetration and capital investment.

In the new management structure at Abel, Don R. Swanson will continue as Abel’s President and Chief Operating Officer, while Glen Krapff is promoted to Vice President and Chief Engineer. Jeff Patterson remains as Director of Sales.

Mayfly has been working on the partnership with Abel for more than a year after it became attracted by the Californian company’s people-orientated philosophy.

“Abel is a people company first. That is what attracted us to them,” said Dragoo. “The best people will ultimately drive innovation and Abel has been producing the highest quality products and leading in fly reel design for a quarter of a century.”

Abel is famous for its proprietary artistic fish graphic process. Each product is hand-painted in-house and then anodised for strength and longevity. Original fish art by top artists is replicated to illustrate virtually every sportfish from trout to tarpon. Abel now produces more than 20 machine-milled models and sizes of reels.

“The key to the success of Abel is the company’s name and brand strength,” said Don R. Swanson. “We have a name that stands for a passionate love of fly-fishing, quality, precision-machining and outstanding customer service. And, of course, our 100% ‘made in the USA’ commitment.

Glen Krapff added: “We are the only reel manufacturer to offer virtually limitless options – open or closed frame, wood or aluminium handle, reel foot and colours.”

The Mayfly Group’s mission statement is to “create, acquire and partner with top consumer outdoor manufacturers, distributors and brands whose goals are to build the best and most dependable recreational products in the world.”

The Mayfly Group was founded in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and is headquartered in Nevada. No financial details of the deal have been made public.
